Dental Exams & Routine Cleanings

Dental Exam

At your initial visit, our team will perform a comprehensive dental exam to assess your overall oral health. Routine check-up exams may include reviewing diagnostic X-rays to identify cavities, bone loss, or other concerns; completing an oral cancer screening; evaluating gum and bone health; checking for tooth decay; and examining existing restorations such as fillings and crowns. X-rays are taken on an individualized schedule based on your dental history, current needs, risk factors, and North Carolina State Dental Board guidelines.

Professional Dental Cleaning

Professional dental cleanings are performed by our Registered Dental Hygienists and play a vital role in maintaining oral health. Your cleaning includes removing plaque and hardened tartar from above and below the gumline, followed by polishing to remove surface stains and remaining plaque. This helps prevent gum disease and keeps your smile healthy and bright.

Dental X-rays

Dental X-rays are essential diagnostic tools that allow our team to detect conditions not visible during a routine exam, such as cavities between teeth, bone loss, infections, and abnormalities below the gumline. We follow guidelines set by the North Carolina State Dental Board while customizing X-ray frequency based on each patient’s individual health history and risk factors. This personalized approach allows us to diagnose early and treat conservatively—helping protect both your oral health and your finances. Dental X-rays use very low levels of radiation and are considered safe, with exposure comparable to what we receive from natural sources in a single day. Our office uses modern digital imaging and protective measures, such as lead shielding, to further minimize exposure. The type and frequency of X-rays are recommended by your dentist and hygienist based on your age, exam findings, and overall risk for dental disease.

How to Brush & Floss

Proper brushing and flossing are essential for maintaining a healthy smile. Brush at least twice daily using a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, holding the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and using gentle, circular motions. Be sure to clean the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of every tooth, use the tip of the brush to clean behind the front teeth, and brush your tongue to remove bacteria. Electric toothbrushes are also effective—simply place the bristles on the teeth and gums and allow the brush to do the work. Floss daily to clean between teeth and below the gumline, gently guiding the floss between teeth and curving it into a “C” shape around each tooth. Move the floss up and down along the tooth surface, and use floss holders or other aids if traditional flossing is difficult.
